Here is a challenging bicycle route from the UC Santa Barbara campus, at sea level on the Pacific Ocean, up to the San Marcos Pass at elevation 2224 feet. The first several miles from the campus are along a bicycle trail but then the remainder up to the summit is along roadways. The bulk of the 2000' climb takes place on N. San Marcos Road and CA154, only about 6 miles for a 6%+ grade. Magnificent views on the climb and descent. The hairpin turns on the descent can be heart stopping for a non-racing touring cyclist such as myself.
